What is MACH.2 dual-actuator hard drive technology?

Computing power, storage capacities, and storage performance: all must continue moving forward in order for technology innovators to solve humanity's greatest challenges.

As higher areal densities on future hard drives put downward pressure on performance, MACH.2™ multi-actuator technology will more than offset these pressures. That means customers with data-intensive applications will continue to enjoy the highest levels of hard drive performance—including IOPS, throughput, and reduced latency—while they simultaneously keep up with the need to manage ever-increasing quantities of data.

MACH.2 is the world's first multi-actuator hard drive technology, containing two independent actuators that transfer data concurrently. MACH.2 solves the need for increased performance by enabling parallelism of data flows in and out of a single hard drive. By allowing the data center host computer to request and receive data from two areas of the drive simultaneously, MACH.2 doubles the IOPS performance of each individual hard drive.

With MACH.2, hyperscale data centers can access performance gains without sacrificing capacity or TCO.

Double the Performance

MACH.2 provides up to 2x performance—with two independent actuators and data paths, it enables concurrent I/O streams to and from the host.

Optimal Latency

Doubles data transfer rates over single-actuator drives by improving sequential performance.

Maximize Drive Utilization

MACH.2 utilizes parallelism technology to enable two independent streams for dual-channel access.

Seagate MACH.2 multi-actuator technology breaks the hard drive throughput record with up to 480MB/s sustained throughput

How did MACH.2 reach 480MB/s sustained throughput?

Seagate MACH.2 multi-actuator technology broke the throughput record, demonstrating up to 480MB/s sustained throughput—the fastest ever from a single hard drive. By enabling parallelism of data flows in and out of a single drive, MACH.2 delivers the IOPS, throughput and reduced latency that data-intensive applications demand.
